STRAND BY STRAND HAIR EXTENSIONS GOOD OR BAD?

Q - How long do or should hair extensions last for?
A - Hair extensions are meant to last up to 3 months. Many people may wear them much longer but as you wear your extensions you may accumulate dreads because the hair you loose within the attachments may clump together forming very weighty dreads. This additional weight can cause stress on you hair follicles and you might loose those hairs.

Q - How long does my hair have to be to get hair extensions?
A - Your hair should be at least 4” long to apply extensions. The bonds should hang at least 3/4” from the root area to allow for free flowing strands.
Q - Which systems methods last the longest?

A - The methods of installing hair extensions are numerous for sure but basically all generating from similar techniques. The method which is the best would be the method you prefer; it is totally ones own preference. I think the keratin fusion methods are less damaging on your hair if installed and removed properly. Also home maintenance has allot to say about the condition of your extensions. Ask for instructions on how to take care of them properly. Hot tools can melt the fusion glue so care is needed when drying. If you can keep the dreads out of your hair clients go up to six months with them in, but careful maintenance is needed to keep them nice. Micro linking can be heavy on the hair follicles which may be harder to wear depending on hair type. They can with-stand the hot tools though. If regular hairstyling is probably these methods may be better. Be care though you the client can pull these out.

Q - What kind are better to buy and have a professional put in?

A - It is always best to have a professional install your extensions. Make sure they have taken the training and know what they are doing. Wrong installation can lead to problems. Also blending and distribution are important attributes to beautiful extensions.
A good professional extensions artist should be able to take the amount of weighed hair and distribute it evenly throughout the head.

Q - Are there reusable hair extensions and why do some extension artist say they can reuse them and others say they can not?

A - Reusing the hair is questionable. This again depends on how your extension hair looks after your wear and the products used during it's wear. If you keep the hair nice it would then depend on whether you use multiple colors or not. Multiple colors could blend together when reusing changing the original color and style. This would depend on whether the strands were re-bonded individually or as a whole. Re-bonding strands individually would probably save the hair the best but would be very time consuming either making re-bonding more expensive then buying new hair would be or make your hairstylist work allot of unpaid hours. Re-bonding as a whole would blend multiple colors together. Also with both methods you could loose inches of length from both the bottom and the top. It is very risky for your hairstylist to re-bond them for you. The removers used on your extensions could inhibit them from been installed without falling out shortly after.

Q - Should I wash my hair before getting hair extensions?
A - Yes your hair needs to be clean; freshly cleaned without any oils in it. . So make sure your hair is squeaky clean. Conditioners can be applied but only to the ends of your hair.
Q - How often should I wash my hair when I have extensions in?
A -
Wash your hair every day. Your roots (the base of your hair) must be kept as clean as possible. Your bond attachments must be kept clean and free of oils and conditioners. Oil and moisturizers found in conditioners will start to break down the bonded attachments and cause a mushy feeling to your attachments so always keep your hair clean. If you hair is very grease there is a warning. Greasy hair is not compatible with hair extensions. If this is your problem try drying your attachment with baby powder or a light talcum powder at night to help keep them dry and free of oils. Then wash them often with special cleansing attention to the attachments.

Q - Are there people who should not wear hair extensions?
A -
Hair extensions are not recommended for people with health problems (cancer, heart disease ect.) A low immune system will inhibit the strength of the follicles and may cause you to loose hair. Also there is traction alopecia. This is when the extension hair falls out taking your own hair with it. Besides self inflicted pulling out of the strands this happens when the extensions may be applied wrong, the strands are too heavy for the clients hair, or the client has some medical reason maybe stress ect. If this occurs the client is recommended to remove the extensions immediately at their expense. As an extension artist we apply the extensions in good faith and can not be held responsible for medical reasons. Your extension artist should be fully train to apply hair extensions correctly or replace it with an easy wearing movable light weight extension. Traction alopecia is very rare but if this have happened to you don’t worry about it your hair will grow back.  If you are young and healthy there should be no problems.
Q - How do I know how much hair I need?

A - Easy. Start with one ounce for fine hair, two ounces for medium weight and three ounces for thick hair. Also the extensions can be applied per panel. Two quarter panels will cover the back and one quarter panel on both side. If cost is a problem you may only want to extend the back. Adding the two side panels will double the cost.

Q - Will I need hair at the top sections?
A -
Some peoples hair is very thick on top or shorter layers on top may need more strands/hair to cover this will now add more to the cost of covering a full head of extensions on you.
Q - How many strands are in a head?
A -
Generally speaking 250 strands would make up a full head of extensions. But this all depends on the individual and there needs.
Q - What is the best kind of hair to use for hair extensions?
A -
Always choose Remy hair. Remy means the cuticle of the hairs are all flowing in the same direction as it is when fresh cut from the donors head. Next we like to choose the Double Drawn hair. These are the longest hairs taken from the freshly cut donors hair kept Remy of course. This eliminates the shorter hairs allowing for greater fullness.
Q - Is Indian hair the best hair to buy?
A -
Again it is a matter of preference. Of course there is nice hair in all hair types, but Indian Hair is abundant and easy to wear. Once it have been colored it is very similar to Caucasian hair and does have a slight wave to it making it easy to wear. Asian hair is course and much straighter. European hair is name after were it is manufactured making it’s origin very difficult to determine.
Q - How does you system compare to others?
A -
Our extension system is basically the same links, glues and fusion equipment used by most other extension companies. We use a special combination of acrylic and keratin bonders for long lasting attachment specially compounded for human hair. When home maintenance instructions are followed these bonds will last as long as any others.
Q - What about the hair and color? How does that compare to other companies?
A -
Our hair we use is Remy Indian Temple Double Drawn Hair. We purchase directly from India as virgin hair. We color the hair using a special slow process with non-ammonia coloring techniques to create beautiful long lasting colors. We recommend our professional products for the best quality home maintenance.
Q - What about the bonding how is that done?
A -
Like we mentioned we use a combination of acrylic and keratin bonders and press the tips right here in are salon. Most extensions companies have both the color and tipping process done overseas making their labor chargeable by our Canadian customs as well as being charged the applicable taxes caused by the labor charges. We do this process here in Canada this makes us allot less expensive then most of the other salons.
Q - Can I go in the swimming pool ?
A
- This is not recommended for our own hair period unless you use proper products to protect your hair against the chlorine. So I could not recommend it for extensions either it could harm the hair. There are conditioners and products you should be using for the chlorine water to protect your hair. We sell Farouk CHI products for our extensions system. They are the products that we have tested and that we can recommend safely.

Ask for home maintenance instructions sheets to follow when you get your extensions.

ON LINE PRICE CALCULATION

As you probably know extensions can range in price. The hair will change in cost from length and color. We recommend our Indian Temple Remy Double Drawn hair. The prices very on color and length and are priced by the ounce. So lets just say you want 16" length . Hair is sold by the ounce with 40 - 100 strands per ounce depending on density of the strands. (14" & 12" lengths may contain more strands per ounce)
Fine hair finer strands are best. Thicker hair can take much thicker strands making less strands. Definitely the finer the strands the easier they are to wear. So if you are the "princess and the pea" don't get thicker strands. Of course the thicker the strand the cheaper the extension job.

It is impossible to give an exact cost on extensions, but a price line can be followed if the client needs.
Lets take an average amount for an example lets say you want 70 strands from your ounce. The price of installation is $2.00 a strand plus $.50 per strand for the integration system. (Fusion, micro links, exc.) 70 X $2.50 = $175.00 plus GST. Hair starts at $110.00 per ounce plus GST & PST = $285.00 + taxes. If you wanted to add more hair whatever the weight and strands added would raise the price.Hope this explains it to you better.
